Nathan Buss

Finance Administrator

I am a hometown boy. I grew up in the northern Twin Cities suburb of Mounds View. The street I grew up on was great. All of the families that lived on the street had young children, so there were plenty of friends with whom to play and explore the neighborhood. We were an adventurous bunch who built huge snow forts by snow blowing the entire back yard into a massive pile. We also built forts in the ground by digging holes and tunnels and built tree houses with cable swings going from tree to tree. I guess I liked the neighborhood enough that I bought and live in the house in which I was raised.

I was raised in a Christian home and had gone to church all my life. I went simply because it was the right thing to do, and really did not have any sort of passion for being involved in church. Dare I say, I hated church. I constantly questioned why I needed to attend and my purpose as a Christian. One day my parents invited me to a church called Substance. After a few weeks of attending--and having already gotten roped into serving--I was working in the Info Center and realized a person can have passion for church and serve with others who also have a passion. Now (proving God does have a sense of humor), I work for an institution I hated. Dare I say love it!

My wife's name is Alesha. I met my wife at my sister's birthday party at a restaurant in Minneapolis. My sister and Alesha became friends through Substance. Both Alesha and I worked in the InfoCenter and I feel I can blame the InfoCenter for the relationship. We were married in May of 2011.

We technically do not have children as of yet, but we have a baby boy on the way. He is due May 20, 2012--one day before our first anniversary.

I have a BA and MBA from the University of Saint Thomas. I have an AAS in Computer Networks from Dunwoody. At some point I plan on getting my doctorate in some type of business. Perhaps international relations or law. My background is mostly in commercial real estate. I have worked in the industry for about 10 years. I have been specifically involved in leasing, construction, management, finance and marketing of commercial properties. I currently teach business and IT classes on an adjunct basis.

I am passionate about finance and organizing systems, That is, making things operate efficiently and building structure (my ENTJ side coming out). I also enjoy day trading and reading the Wall Street Journal.

I am grateful that I get to work with Substance because here I am able to use my talents and passions to do something that will truly make a difference beyond my own life.

My wife and I like to go out to eat at least once a week, spend time with our families and travel. We also enjoy outdoor activities such as ATVing and spending time at the lake in the summer. We really enjoy getting to know new people, so please do not hesitate to introduce yourself when you see us.
